History of Mull

Early years

Mull has been inhabited for a very long time. Evidence has been found of people living on Mull since 4000BC. Around Loch Scridain there is a string of 9 forts (Duns), built around 600BC, that presumably protected small farming communities.

Scandinavian raids

From the first century AD onwards Mull was raided by Danish and Norwegian tribes. "Ormsaig" is a Norse name.

St Columba

Mull was one of the first islands to become christianized, since St Columba founded a monastery on Iona in 563 AD to spread christianity. In the beautiful abbey on Iona there are expositions about St Columba and the spread of christianity in Europe.

Clan MacClean of Duart

In the middle ages Mull was mostly controlled by the MacLeans of Duart. The majestic Duart castle still is the home of descendants of the MacClean clan.
